Ten Eyck Cooling Tower Replacement

Scope:
This project, performed for NYS OGS, replaced the roof-mounted cooling towers serving the 16-story Ten Eyck Office Building in Albany, NY. The original towers were 22 years old and failing, with deteriorated steel dunnage creating a safety hazard.
Key Features:
  • Mechanical: Two new 800-ton cooling towers installed on galvanized steel dunnage; design improved accessibility for long-term maintenance.
  • Phasing/Logistics: Careful scheduling allowed work with minimal downtime—using weekend shutdowns to install butterfly valves and replace towers during winter months.
  • Coordination: Required detailed traffic control planning with the City of Albany to shut down Pearl Street during crane operations.
  • Performance: Final design reduced sound and vibration levels compared to the previous system.
Outcome:

The project delivered reliable year-round cooling capacity with improved safety, serviceability, and performance for the high-rise office building.
